2024 Special Issue: Esports, Sports Themed Games, and Virtual Sports
Aim and Scope of the Special Issue:
This special issue aims to explore the rapidly evolving fields of esports, sports-themed video games and virtual sports in Asia and beyond from multiple perspectives. It seeks to advance scholarly discussions on the significance of esports and sports gaming in contemporary society, addressing both opportunities and challenges within these domains. The scope of this issue includes research on government policies regulating esports and video games, the role of governing bodies and organizations and the broader industry ecosystem. It also covers integrity issues in esports, such as fairness, ethics and regulatory concerns. Additionally, the issue examines sports video games from cultural, social, and economic perspectives, as well as the emergence and impact of virtual sports. Further areas of focus include player communities, gaming cultures, and the diverse practices of play. By bringing together interdisciplinary insights, this special issue aims to offer critical reflections on the role of video games in digital entertainment, sports industries and broader society.
