2019 Workshop on Writing Articles for International Journals

The first workshop of writing articles for international journals takes place in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (Indonesia University of Education) between 28th and 31st March 2019. It is co-organised by the IJHS Asia and the Sport Education Programme, Indonesia University of Education. 48 PhD students and young academics from 14 universities in Indonesia enthusiastically attend this workshop.

The aim of the workshop is to introduce young scholars from Indonesia in the field of sport studies to the IJHS and other sport and leisure studies journals published by T&F; and advise them on how to prepare their papers for the publication. In the four day workshop participants are taught from idea, to choosing journal, to writing the first draft, using critical friends, refining the drafts, checking reference style, proofreading English and going through the check list before submission. Participants practices step by step of the stages.

The workshop also discusses about some of the major themes in relation to Asia sport culture and culture in general. It is agreed that there is an urgent need to undertake research of sport history, culture, policy and social changes in Asia countries in general and in Indonesia in particular. A working group consisting of senior professors, young academics and PhD students will be set up to concentrate on research on sport history, culture and policy and social change in Indonesia and the research results will be published in international journals and in a book form too.

The feedback from participants is positive. Muhammad Arif Al Ardha, a young lecturer from Universitas Negeri Surabaya, comments that the workshop has opened his eyes to the potential research areas. Ira Purnamasari, the three times golden medalist of Judo at Asian Games and a PhD of the Indonesia University of Education, comments that she has learnt, for the first time, how to conduct a quality paper for international journals and the workshop has prepared her for her future submissions to international journals. Dr Amung Ma’mun, the Director of Sport Education Programme, recommends that T&F should host more this kind of workshop to help Asian young scholars to share their research results on the international stage. Professor Fan Hong, Academic Editor of IJHS Asia, agrees that since the 21st Century is regarded as the ‘Asia Century’ we should develop the young talent in the academia world and equip them to share their research results with international readership.

Participants think that the brochure ‘Tips for Publishing Your Research’ produced by T&F is very helpful and would like to recommend it to other researchers.
