The 2019 International Conference of Sport History and Culture

Theme: The Olympics and the Asian Century

The International Conference of Sport History and Culture was initiated in 2015 by the International Journal of History and Sport and Jiangxi Normal University, China and Bangor University, UK and becomes an annual event since then. The second one took place at Shanghai Sport University in 2016, the third one at Anhui Normal University, Wuhu in 2017; the fourth one at Shaanxi Normal University, Xi’an in 2018. The fifth one will take place at Zhejiang Normal University, Jinhua in 2019.

The theme of the conference in October 2019 will focus on the Olympic Movement and the Olympic Games in Asia in the context of the rise of Asia; examine the history and evolution of the Olympic Movement and the Olympic Games in the global context; discuss the core concepts and the government and governance of the Olympic Movement and the Games in the context of Asia; analyse the relationship between the Olympics and politics, nationalism, economy, education and cultures with special reference to Asia; and critically review the Olympics and the challenges the Olympic Movement and the Games are facing in the future.

 

The following research topics and research areas will be welcomed at the conference:

  • Definition of core concepts of the Olympic Movement and the Games;
  • The Olympics and the Asia Century;
  • The history of the Olympic Movement and the Olympic Games in Asia;
  • The government and governance of the Olympic Games in Asian countries;
  • Case study:The summer and winter Games in Asia, such as: 1962 Tokyo Summer Olympics; 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics; 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics; 1992 Albertville Winter Games; 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics; Post-Beijing Games; 2022 Tokyo Summer Olympics; 2014 Beijing Winter Games; the Paralympics;
  • The Olympic heroes and heroines in Asia;
  • The comparative study of the Olympics between the West and East;
  • The relationship between the Olympics and politics, diplomacy, nationalism, gender, race, ethnicity, youth, economy, education and culture in Asia;
  • The developments and challenges of the Olympic Movement and the Olympics in Asia.
  • And other related topics and areas.

Participants are request to submit their abstract in both English (no more than 100 English characters with space) and Chinese (no more than 200 Chinese characters with space). The abstract should include the name of the author (s); the title of the paper and the text.

The deadline of the abstract submission is 15th May 2019

The deadline of the full paper is 15th March 2020.

The preparation of the full paper will be followed after the conference. Special workshop and writing camp will be organised to assist potential authors to develop their papers for future publication.
