2017 International Conference of Sports History and Culture

In Asian history, there are abundant diversified indigenous or ethnic sports in various regions or nations. In the modern era, however, Asian indigenous sports culture has been challenged unprecedentedly by the expansion of Western sports culture. Since 1990s, increasing national, regional, and international interest in the topic of Asian indigenous sports culture and Asian society has resulted in conferences, seminars, and workshops devoted to the topic as well as the formation of national indigenous or ethnic sports associations, giving voices to indigenous or ethnic sports groups in Asia.

The 2017 International Conference of Sports History and Culture was held at Anhui Normal University, Wuhu, China between 20 and 23 October 2017. The conference was jointly organised by Anhui University, Bangor University and International Journal of the History of Sport. The theme was Globalization and Nationalization: Inheritance and Development of Indigenous Sports Culture in Asia. Scholars from Asia, Europe and North America discussed the development and inheritance of indigenous sports culture in Asia in the context of globalization, commercialization and modernization.
